This CNN articles speaks of Coupe-Decale: a type of popular dance music originating from Ivory Coast and the Ivorian diaspora in Paris, France. This article focuses of the origins of Coupe-Decale, it's influence of the ivorian community, and it's current status. Coupe-Decale traces back to the late 1990s- a few years before the Ivorian Civil War-in the Ivorian community in the Parisian club scene. It then diffused to Ivory Coast and other part of Africa. The Coupe-Decale became a mode of escapism for the youth in during this time . The group that can be credited with starting the moement -The Jet Set- faced the death of one of their leaders and competetion between the leaders. Thus, while the movement still exists new artists from all around West Africa hace its faith in thier hands and will struggle to replicate the influence that Coupe-Decale had in its prime-time.
As someone who grew up surrounded by this music, I can attest to the fact that this music was very influencial to all of Ivory Coast. This is reflects Ivory Coast's culture becuase because like most African cultures, music and unique dances serve to unite the people. It worrries me to know that the faith of this music is not predicted to be good, but that may just show that it is time for a new form of music to sweep africa. Rather than looking back nostalgically on old culture, I think this article should focus on the future of Ivorian music becuase I know good things will come from it.
As stated above music, like in most countries, is a very uniting force for all Ivorians. Ivory coast is a very diverse country filled with people of multiple nationalities and ethnicities, and popular music was something that we all have in common. This music was especially true during the Civil War when Ivorians were more divided than ever; Coupe-Decale was something that could be ennjoyed by everyone no matter what side they were on.
