This article focuses on how secularism in France causes feeds Islamophobia. France has been in a state of emergency since the Paris attacks last November 2015. This article claims that the emergency laws- which are not explicitly stated in the novel- currently in place are unfairly used to single out French Muslims. While the president of France seems to send mixed signals as he states that "there is a problem with Islam," then claims that France is "trying to adapt principles to the emergence of Islam in French society."
This combination of a secular state with a sizable religious groups has led to this comflict. I think it is rational for France to have a current negative view on Islam after the attack on ISIS, but French leaders must understand that targetting all Muslims in the country in not the answer. This article was not clear on what these unfair laws encompasses Thus, I cannot say much about them, but I am aware that France has banned particular things realting to Islam such as the Burkini. I cannot think of any reason to not allow a people to express their religion through the use of clothing, rather than simply not wanting the religion to be practiced. I don't know if France has a "freedom of religion" line in their constitution, but it doesn't appear to be so from their cuurent policies.
It is a known fact that like most European states, France is a secular state. Thus in france, religion should be a neutral matter, not endorced in public schools , hospitals, etc. There are laws in French school forbiding religious symbols such as Muslim headscarfs or Jewish Yarmulkeses . France is also has the largest percentage of Muslims in western Europe. I believe that this would have caused a clash anyways, but was worsened by the Paris attacks. I do not know the exact future of Muslims in France , but I fear for their freedom to practice religon in this secular state.
